Magic By Misdirection 2

[Enrico Varella is the founder and editor of The Quantum Ring, the official newsletter of IBM 115, Singapore since 1995. He has been published in The Linking Ring, and The Encyclopaedia of Card Forces (by Lewis Jones). He has received credit for his creation, the Tiepit (a jacket-less topit) in Bob Fitch's The Topit Workshop 3-DVD set (Kohler Magic). He is currently completing his omnibus of his Tiepit principles and application.]

In my last essay, which was more a summary of Bob Chua's Close-Up lecture on Misdirection Principles and Applications (3 February 2007), I briefly mentioned some specific principles of misdirection. I also introduced the concept of a 'System of Integrated Deception'.
Integrated Deception, my own jargon for the 'Misdirection Package' (coined by close-up magician, David Williamson), is a holistic combination of method, influence and applied psychology. Tommy Wonder wrote in his Book of Wonder (Hermetic Press) that 'we cannot perform magic unless we understand human psychology'. Human communication, and thus psychology, combine verbal and non-verbal language.

First things first, Thanks to all who came yesterday to SMC's first gathering of 2007. Without all of your participation, it would not have been a success. Shade has given a very detailed review of yesterday events and I just like to add on a bit of my experiences.

Uncle Bob Chua
I like to say a big Thank You to Uncle Bob for taking his time out to give us a lecture on Presentation & Misdirection and share his personal experiences with us. During the lecture, Uncle Bob showed how to use body movement as misdrections and build misdirections into the routine itself. His thoughts, experiences and finesse on magic was definitely many times more than the meal that we all had at Mac. There are a lot more that we can learn from Uncle Bob and yesterday was just an icing of the cake. Many Thanks to you Uncle Bob happy.gif

Enrico (a.k.a Ironman) tongue.gif
Enrico, our other special guest of the day. What can I say about this natural, dynamic and comedic performer. He just cracks up everyone when ever he performs and I will not forget his Hong Kong accent when he was performing his coins across. It was really funny. His Card at Any Number left all of us thinking he has some magical powers because he did not do it once, twice but 5 or 6 times in a row and not once he failed. It was really fantastic to see how he presented it. It was indeed an honour for me to be able to jam with him. Thank You Enrico for your support. Best of luck for your next Ironman Competition in Langkawi. Enjoy the swim, ride and run. Langkawi's a beautiful place. We're looking forward to hear more stories from you happy.gif

Axl, Shade, Gordon
Thank you guys for making organising this event. It would not had been possible without your invovement, many nights of coffee, planning and headache each time an event comes up. We mods were so stressed by our Mr SMC, Aloy that during the mod meeting last night, Shade spilled Tea all over Axl's jeans. Poor Axl was in a wet and burning sensation tongue.gif Axl, if you're able to post up some pictures that you took last night, it'll be great. Great Work guys and keep up the magic spirit happy.gif

Magic till the Wee hours
Yesterday was indeed the longest jamming session Gordon, Axl, Shade and I had. After supper we were intending to adjourn back home but our dear Axl got passport clearance from his gf to come back and how can we spoil our Axl's intention. The session back at Shade's place was really fun. All 4 of us go round robin and perfom for one another and we kept making jokes of selling our effects to one another laugh.gif Shade, our Cardshark floored us again and again with all his Card stacking and this time round he packed it with a memory system. 3 selected card from a shuffled pack, and then 3 piles from the deck were fairly distrbuted to us. We shuffle each pile and Shade was able to eliminate all 49 cards. Leaving only each of us holding our original selection. Not only that, he was able to name what card each of us were holding. Pls note that there was no Forces or Phishing used at all. Slaute you man Shade...

All in all, I have to say, it was a fantastic session. I met new members, old memebers and also soon to be memebers. I'll see everyone at the next gathering we look forward to all your support and participation again. Thanks smile.gif

Cheers
Jerome
